Gaslighting Is Not Just Out There – It’s In Here
Gaslighting. It’s a frequently referenced term, increasingly bandied about as part of the popular lexicon over the last decade. It refers to a form of psychological manipulation in which distortion of perception of reality is employed to gain power, control, or advantage. This can involve making a person question their judgment, or sanity.
However, I am going to apply that reference in an atypical manner that could spark a wake-up from the unconscious mesmerism wrought by our subjective conditioning. A wake-up that can result in dispelling the complacency-driven limitation of which many succumb.
The Cultural Era of Gaslighting
Magnified by the rapidly evolving internet revolution, gaslighting has become the cultural scaffolding of society. As ‘truth’ is legitimized as subjective, the gaslighting era is fueling (pun intended) its own power to propel itself.
In a broader sense though, we have been ‘gaslighting’ ourselves since the inception of subjective reasoning has skewed and therefore constricted our perception of our possibility and capability.
In effect, we drink the Kool-Aid of our own conditioning resulting in flailing in the quicksand of our self-imposed limitations. It is the mirage of all mirages; the psychological slight of hand that dupes us into thinking we are where we’ve been.
How do we gaslight ourselves? By believing the narratives (stories) our conditioning lulls us into accepting. This occurs on a personal and universal level.
A Real-Time Example of Subjective Gaslighting
As if to amplify this article’s focus, I received a ‘mayday’ communication from a client just a day ago as I was in the midst of writing this article that acutely exemplifies its focus.
Client ‘Jane’ contacts me in a fit of anguish, overwhelm and despair as she emotionally tailspins about what she considers a mis-prescribed medication dosage, for which she depends on in her health management protocol.
“Isaiah, this doctor (not Jane’s regular doctor) prescribed half of the dosage of (a particular) medication I am accustomed to taking and I’ve spent days trying to rectify the matter to no results!”
Jane then continues emotionally wringing out her frustration through detailing the trauma of her plight and feared repercussions.
For context, Jane experiences layered, tumultuous complications in just walking to the corner mailbox. Jane is essentially of sound mind – hers is not of disabled infirmity.
Complication is simply the narrative of her life. Jane has essentially been gaslighted by the notion that all of life is complicated. This gaslighting narrative of complication has defined what it means to be alive to Jane. Everything Jane engages turns out to be layered with complication.
After tossing the life-preserver of objective counsel regarding the medication matter, Jane was able to regain her centered equilibrium with which to manage the situation.
Rejecting the Self-Gaslighting Narrative
We all have subjective narratives forged from our interpretations of the conditions that have impacted on our living. However, those gaslighting narratives need not define what it means to be alive.
If we continue to gaslight ourselves from our limiting narratives about ourselves and our lives, we do indeed turn those narratives into limitation-sustaining fuel for living. We live for the narrative rather than our true capacity.
Instead, I propose that we utilize a sure-fire antidote to our subjective gaslighting – nature. Yes, Nature. Nature is immune to gaslighting. Nature is not influenced by groupthink, popularity, trends or historical interpretation.
Nature only knows to fulfill its potential. Does a flower compare itself to another flower? Become jealous of another flower or feel insecure?
Nature’s abundance is not influenced by the political climate (its ramifications can impact it – but not influence it). And nature certainly doesn’t fearmonger or gossip.
We become vulnerable to gaslighting because we forget our nature – not our ‘human nature’ but our fundamental nature. Our fundamental capacity for abundance. Our fundamental capacity for well-being. Our fundamental capacity to fulfill our potential.
Ways We Gaslight Ourselves Without Realizing It
As you undertake the mission to live and understand your fundamental nature, you too build up an immunity to gaslighting. You “snap out of it,” so to speak.
You snap out of believing your childhood determines the circumference of your happiness. You snap out of thinking your well-being is in the hands of others. You stop drinking the Kool-Aid – as another client of mine expressed literally, ‘I don’t like Kool-Aid anyway.’
Let’s agree to align with our fundamental nature and restore inner immunity to compromised living. What follows are such ways to do so.
Health gaslighting.
I once heard someone say, “There are no incurable illnesses, only incurable people.” Decide to be a person willing to defy – not fight or resign yourself to – hereditary ailments, prognosis, and assumed health expectations.
Relationship gaslighting.
This one is all too familiar. Decide not to normalize settling and be determined to recognize why you do so and adjust or release accordingly.
Money gaslighting.
Psychologically insist on recognizing that the abundance witnessed in Nature’s ever-producing foliage is the basis of your financial nature too. This inner alignment welcomes financial increase rather than struggles for it.
Aging gaslighting.
Release the assumptions, the rhetoric, the anecdotes and belief systems regarding what each decade is ‘supposed’ to mean about the passing of time. This is not denial, it’s rejection. Rejecting the assumptions of conventional acceptance of what’s possible and not possible purely based on a number.
Success gaslighting.
Release the narratives of success being determined by outer forces, climates, conditions or demographics. This is less about blind optimism and more about exercising autonomy, independent thinking. Facts are considered but not determining.
Forgive the unconscious gaslighting that has resulted in errors of judgment and actions.
Forgive the regret of gaslighting’s hypnotism.
Forgive the resentment, self-hate and self-judgment of gaslighting’s wrath.
Forgive the gaslighting and you strengthen your immunity from it.
