Fear, Frenzy, and False Control

A client recently started her therapy session with me in utter turmoil and overwhelm, lamenting the state of her mind due to headlines, news reports, and public conversations about perceived threats from proposed changes to governmental structures she depends on.

Amid the gossip, fear-mongering, and projections of catastrophic collapse, she was feeling fearful, angry, and helpless—caught in the same tailspin many find themselves in during these frenzied realignments of world affairs.

“Boy, I couldn’t wait for my session this week!” she exclaimed, clearly needing a restorative reset. As a recipient of governmental financial support stemming from a disability, she felt her whole world—as she knew it—was caving in.

After requiring her to take a deep, releasing breath, I gently asked what she felt was being threatened. She replied, “My primary source of income.” I had the distinct sense she wanted to punctuate that with a “fool!”—and I mentally appreciated the restraint.

Power of Perception

When we feel at the mercy of a controlling faction, person, or circumstance, our mental-emotional state can feel swallowed by the perception of being victimized. We may internalize anger and dismay, projecting it outward while experiencing a draining sense of helplessness and loss of control.

It can feel like being pulled by a riptide of emotional distress into the depths of anguish.

So what’s the lifeline that can pull us back to the shore of stability and assurance?

A reference point reset.

Your Independent Agency

Discover—or remind yourself—that though you participate in the world, you are not a product of it. What does that mean?

It means there remains within you an independent agency—an animating awareness that enables your brain-mind to function. This basis of your nature is never touched by fluctuating circumstances or variable factions.

Don’t let that sound too heady—put simply: you are in the world, but not of it.

This is not about adopting a belief system. It’s a universal truth: all beings exist from an animating agency. This isn’t a treatise on existentialism—the same agency beating the heart of the tyrant is beating the heart of the revered nun.

And that’s your leverage.

Recognizing this enables you to act toward the circumstances rather than react to them. From that independent agency that is the basis of your existence, you can decide that a particular means—like the client’s government support—may be relevant but doesn’t have to be deemed primary. To call it primary becomes the choice your life circumstance adheres to rather than being bound to. It’s a choice.

Decide Your Freedom

That choice is where your power lies.

It’s in your decision to choose other decisions, rather than unconsciously thinking someone else’s decisions must govern you.

One of my favorite movie lines is from singer/actor Cher’s from the movie Moonstruck: “Snap out of it!”
You don’t have to automatically assume conditions or people control your well-being when you recognize your well-being belongs to the jurisdiction of that independent internal agency.

I often say in these newsletters: be your own salvation. That doesn’t mean living a life of defiance. It means living a life of recognized autonomy.

After reading this article, write down three factors in your life that feel limiting or negatively interfering. Then decide to release seeing them as limiting or controlling.

Don’t confuse this with being reckless or putting a positive spin on dire appearances—the point is to engage your independent capacity so that liberating insights and solutions can arise, unblocked by the belief in conditioned dependency.

You’ll be astounded at the breakthroughs that unfold for you—once you release the false constraints of dependency, in whatever form they’ve taken.

And that client? Soon after our session, she received an unexpected insurance check for $20,000.
