Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste

“Never let a crisis go to waste.”
This saying has echoed across many corners of modern culture, and it essentially means: take advantage of the interruption or disruption you’re facing.

This past week alone, no fewer than three client sessions in my practice centered on personal crises. You could call it a "crisis week"—therapeutically speaking.

Crisis and the Reflex to Vent

The kneejerk reaction to a crisis—especially one where we feel victimized—is to crave immediate remedy or, at the very least, relief through venting. This initial reaction is fueled by fear and becomes a way to validate the crisis as real and urgent.

When a client presents what they perceive as a crisis, it’s usually a mixture of both: a wish for a solution and a need to vent. Often, even unaware to the client sharing their anguish, it becomes extended venting disguised as further detailing of the crisis.

A skilled therapist recognizes when explaining morphs into pure venting – the first indication the perceived crisis is going to waste.

Perception vs. Reality in a Crisis

You may have noticed my repeated use of qualifiers like “perceived crisis” or “in their view.” This isn’t to minimize the issue—it’s the first step in reclaiming power from it.

To recognize that crisis is a challenge to one’s perception of capability—not the actual person—is to start making use of it. What’s under threat isn’t the person themselves, but their belief in their ability to handle what’s happening.

All Fear Is a Misperception of Capability

All fear stems from a misperception of your own capability. When we forget—or haven’t yet discovered—our fundamental, inherent, irrevocable Agency, we feel consumed by helplessness.

But from the vantage point of Agency, crisis becomes an opportunity, not a constriction.

Strength Doesn’t Come from Survival Alone

That old saying, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, is misleading. It speaks more to endurance than to development.

Crisis isn’t about survival—it’s about discovering what wants to be strengthened within you. It’s not an invitation to self-blame, criticize, or judge. Crisis is a wake-up call to value the Agency in you of which access has either atrophied or not yet been realized.

Crisis as an Opportunity for Inner Value

If your crisis is financial and repetitive, it’s not asking you to calm your panic with superficial maneuvers. It’s calling you to unearth your true value so that empowered, constructive thinking can replace fearful, reactive thought.

If your crisis is related to physical health, it’s not a prompt for fear—it’s a request for non-judgmental accountability of your power—your Agency.

If your crisis shows up in relationships, it’s not a pass to spiral in blame or judgment. It’s an opportunity to release patterns that have sabotaged that harmonious Agency.

If your crisis is professional—related to business or career—it’s not asking you to let external conditions dictate limitation. It’s offering you the chance to access your innovation and self-worth.

What Exactly Is Agency?

Yes, I’ve peppered this article with the “A-word”—Agency. So what does that mean?

Agency is Life’s Power. It’s the driving force behind all living expression—the inherent power to express. One of the simplest examples of Agency is authentic growth.

We witness growth in nature, but we don’t see the force that powers it. That non-visible drive is Agency—the capacity to express and fulfill.

You Are Built with Agency

And since you are an aspect of nature, Agency is part of your nature.

You have the Agency to respond to anything that confronts you with strength and capacity. Forgetting this leads to the default patterns of conditioned thought—limitation, fear, lack, and helplessness. And that, more often than not, is the real crisis—not the circumstance itself.

How to Reclaim Your Agency in Crisis

So if you find yourself in the midst of crisis, or feeling its weight, pause. Take a breath. Release the overwhelm.

Then ask yourself:
“What Agency of my nature am I allowing this matter to obscure?”

Only then will you not let a crisis go to waste.
