Breaking the Blues

Melancholy, feeling down, unmotivated, depression – I was going to focus this post on ‘holiday blues’ in the advent of the holiday season upon us because for some, holidays can be triggering, but decided it needed to be broader to illumine the disorder of depression that can have debilitating impact.

Depression affects more than 264 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It's a leading cause of disability globally. In the U.S., the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that an estimated 21 million adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2021, representing 8.4% of all U.S. adults.

The article here does not focus on the pros and cons of diagnosis, or the need for, or appropriateness of medication for treatment of such condition, but rather, the unrecognized culprit that fuels mental and emotional states of dismay, whether mild or severely experienced.

Here’s the thesis I propose for you to consider: Examine what your relationship to life is. Is life based on circumstances that happen and therefore shapes the emotional gage of self-perception? Are you emotionally and psychologically inflated or deflated depending on the nature of the circumstance you are in the midst of? If we take our self-perception cues solely from the landscape of circumstantial particulars, our emotions can become vulnerable to toxic thinking creating a stasis of depressed self-consideration.

Are you emotionally and psychologically inflated or deflated depending on the nature of the circumstance you are in the midst of?

In my therapy work when a client is experiencing feelings that depress their homeostasis of vitality, I break down the word, “depression” inquiring, ‘what is being ‘pressed down?’ (i.e., “de-pression.”) In other words, what about your nature wants to soar and express? What is being pressed down? What thoughts (visa vie, feelings) are denying your spirit of possibility?

What perceptions, ideas and thought patterns are saying, “no” to your organic spirit of buoyancy? The physiological (including biological) indicators of depression are not the cause of depression, they are the formed consequences of how one relates to life. (As the current popular idiom states, ‘correlation is not causation’).

If we reduce our beings to biological imperatives we miss the forest for the trees. Chemical imbalances from which emotional and psychological assessments are made, do not create themselves; there are mental causative proponents that manifest as biological profiles.

Soley treating biological profiles void of recognition of your relationship to life itself, misses the primary bases of what it means to be alive. Circumstances are not Life – circumstances are what occur in Life.

If you strip your identity of all the narratives wrought from your circumstantial inferences what remains is pure unadulterated Life. If you strip your subjective associations of what it means to identify father, mother, sibling, race, culture, gender, age, station, geography, what remains is pure being. Don’t write this off as existential musing.

Dare to recognize this as essentially what it means to be Life, and you strip away all the associative anchors that bind causes of depression. This is not an invitation to lobotomize yourself, but rather to liberate yourself from the subjective conditioning that frames your relationship to Life.

The endeavor to strip yourself of all the superimposed mental constructs that can distort your relationship to Pure Life is not for the purpose of living a nomadic, disconnected life but for the purpose of seeing your inherent fundamental value as the basis of your existence.

It is akin to stripping old paint off an item so that true restoration is enabled. Think long and deliberately about that analogy. You don’t necessarily need to leave your experience of life to restore your homeostasis of well-being so much as you need to mentally dialogue with yourself questioning all the inferences that bombard you with esteem-lowering narratives and associations.

I have frequently in the articles of this newsletter encouraged readers to, ‘be your own salvation.’ This is not, for the religiously inclined, a blasphemous statement of self-appointed Deity status, as it is an invitation to true accountability.

You are not responsible for your thoughts and feelings of depression, but rather, they are cues to initiate a mental stripping of all you think makes you, you.  Disappointed or depressed because a sought-after job didn’t come through? Mentally strip yourself of all the undermining associations you’ve maintained regarding employment.

And if chronic, or bouts of depression have become normalized in the psyche of your being understand that all mental and emotional states release a chemical counterpart into the bloodstream - common recognition of this is noted in the chemical release of adrenaline or endorphins – however, all mental/emotional states release chemicals into the body.

Therefore, before being depressed over your depression consider that your body is unconsciously generating thoughts, feeling and perceptions that trigger depression to get the chemical fix it has acclimated to, rather than assuming hopelessness is the composite of your identity. This realization provides leverage in emancipating yourself from chronic states that undermine well-being.

In this case, seek not to counter melancholy with “positive thinking” per se, but affirmative perceptions and considerations that release chemicals that reacclimate the body to its homeostasis of well-being.  As the body reacclimates, it then reverses the impetus to generate negative feelings to release chemicals of despair to organically considering optimism to release reacclimated chemicals of well-being.

In conclusion

Your physiology is quite neutral, it will become a proponent of whatever chemical stasis it becomes accustomed to. It is our narratives (“things won’t change,” “woe is me,” “I’m not good enough,” and on and on) that become personal takes on identity. Stripping your default narratives as mentioned empowers you to create intentional, personal narratives of self-support rather than reflexive ones born out of the perceptions of circumstances.

To change the interior stasis stemming from what has happened to you, realize you are not what has happened to you.  This is not denial, suppression or reframing of oppressive experiences, it is to recognize there is always an independent agency about your nature (Pure Life) that remains free of personal narratives and can reset the narratives that depress and consign self to sabotaging thoughts and emotions.

Be your own salvation through recognizing that Pure Life’s esteem is you.
